man of honor...

"welcome to 2015,
the year where it's finally
so not weird
to have your best guy friend,
brother or business partner
 stand by your side
 on your big day."

even if it still were
to have a
man of honor
standing next to her
on her wedding day,
it would be
even weirder
for william  not
to be katherine's
stand up guy.

prepared for a road-trip,
will arrived on the lane
last saturday morning.

will: so, what are we doing?

where are we going?
katherine: we are going to murray
to meet up with amanda.
then we are going
to go to a couple
of boutiques
to look at dresses
for my engagement pictures.

looking a little unconvinced

about how fun
our road-trip was sounding
thus far,
will looked over at zack
then at me.

i giggled.

me: we won't be long;

we just want to see
what they have.
will: uh, okay...?...
me:  you and zack
don't even have to
go into the shops.
y'all can drop us off
and go do whatever,
then come back and get us.
katherine: yeah, trick!
then we are going
to find a hotel,
hang out by the pool,
and later
go to pagliai's for pizza.
will: oh, uh, okay...

will gave me a nod
and the

katherine: are we
ready to rock and roll?
me: almost, don't
you need to do something

katherine gave me
the puzzled look.

i mouthed,
"will's tee shirt...
his chucks?"
katherine responded,
"oh, yeah!"

katherine excused herself
then quickly returned
with the things
she needed
to formally ask
(she had already
done so)
will to be her
man of honor:

~a sign requesting,
"will you be my...",
~a tee shirt bearing
the title,
"man of honor",
~tiffany blue
chuck taylors,
which matched
the ones katherine
had chosen for herself.

katherine: here, will,
put this on,
we've got to go
take pictures!
will: uh, okay.

will held up
in front of him
the tee katherine
handed him.

will: is this silver?
(will's a little colorblind;)
me: yes, silver matte.
will smiled.
will: cool, i like it!!!

he really did.

he put on his new shirt,
grabbed his chucks,
and katherine grabbed
her sign.

katherine: let's go out
in the backyard.

will and i
followed her.
after posing the two,
i captured
the official picture...
then a couple more
shots just for fun.

we loaded the jeep
and headed
not long into
our journey,
i heard katherine
ask william...

katherine: will, are you my bffl?
will: yeah, i'm your bffl!
katherine: you know,
i was thinking,
no matter how long
we are apart,
we just always pick back up
right where we left off...
will: yeah, i was thinking
about that the other night...
it's cool!

the i-do-shoe...

so, while i was dreaming of
and pinning
the most beautifully detailed
 bridal pumps
to my pinterest
princess katherine
had pedi-accessory
ideas of her own...

the day katherine said, "yes!"
to the dress,
she also committed to
her i-will-heel
her i-do-shoe.

the owner at ella park
came into the the fitting room
to measure katherine
for her dress.

owner: okay, now do you
have the shoes with you
you are planning to wear
with your dress?

katherine looked over at me
and gave me a quirky smile.

owner: what?  did you forget
to bring them with you.

me: are you going to tell her?

the owner looked at katherine
and smiled awaiting her answer.
katherine's eyes danced,
her quirky grin
turned into a full-blown

me: well, she says she's wearing
converse tennis shoes.

that really did just come
out of my mouth...
katherine elizabeth
is going
to wear chucks
with this beautiful,
australian-inspired gown!
oh my word!

the owner never missed
a beat.

owner: great! do you have them
with you?
katherine: uh...
me: no, we haven't ordered
them yet. however, we do
have a plethora
of them at home.

(katherine's worn chucks
since before she walked.)

me: if need be,
we could come back tomorrow
and bring them.
owner:  that won't be necessary.
i'll be right back.

she left the room,
was gone for a few minutes,
and then returned
with her cell phone in her hand.

owner: it says here
that chuck taylors are
an inch and a half in height.

she looked at katherine
and smiled.

owner: so, we'll just add
an inch and a half
to the length.

katherine looked over at me
and gave me the quirky grin
 i rolled my eyes.

we both giggled.

upon leaving the boutique,
i looked over at katherine...

me: so, you're wearing
chuck taylors;
you're really wearing
under that gorgeous gown?!!?!
katherine: yep!
me: katherineelizabeth!??!?!

i cocked my head to the side
arched my right eyebrow
at her.

she laughed.

me: well, you know
you are going to have
to have a pair of heels
for pictures.
katherine: huh?

i cut my
at the princess.

katherine: o...kay.

let me just say,
i didn't have to twist
the bride-to-be's arm
to get her to look for
"picture" heels...

she found three pairs
she loved,
she couldn't choose among,
she had to have...

of course,

macarthur park...

it was a conclusion
we didn't need to come to
in haste.
we needed to

weigh out and discuss
the pros and cons

of each,
 sleep on it,
and then
and only then
make a decision...

i didn't have to "sleep on it"
personally, i was already well aware
of at least
three downsides
of a kentucky, rooftop wedding
in june...

as we had stood atop
the suite tower
on the rooftop
my back had begun to sweat
(it was hot up there),
courtney mentioned,
in the past,
they'd had to use heavy plate chargers
on the tables
to keep things from blowing away
(it could be very windy up there),
from what i gathered,
the backup plan
for rain
was a little sketchy
(there wasn't a concrete backup plan).

in my opinion,
at best,
the rooftop was going to be

i was all like...
macarthur park...

i knew,
without a doubt,
the rooftop
 was katherine's choice.

okay, truth?

she needed to sleep on it.

when she awoke
the next morning,
katherine got in bed with me.

me: have you made
a decision yet?
katherine: yes, the rooftop!

me: no!!! not the rooftop!!!

me: are you sure?
and, did you get
what the backup plan for rain
was exactly?
katherine: what do you mean?
didn't she say the indoor
rooftop terrace was the backup?
me: i don't think she did say,
but i don't know how you
would be able to have your
in that space,
do you?

me: miserably crowded...

katherine: i don't know,
but she said it wouldn't
be a problem.
i mean we could use
the covered outdoor
area as well.

me: back sweat...

me: well, what if it's not
just rain?
what if it's storming
the wind is blowing?
katherine: mom,
do you just not want me
to do the rooftop?

me: macarthur park...

katherine was getting
quite irritated...

it was time for me to get real.

me: okay, i've been trying to use
reverse psychology on you.
now, i'm just going to be frank.
the only way
the rooftop is going to be
what your are imagining
on saturday,
june fourth, two thousand and sixteen
at half past six o'clock in the evening,
it is
 78 degrees,
low humidity,
with a light breeze
out of the southwest.
in kentucky
on the ohio river...
just isn't that predictable!
katherine: well, i like both,
but the rooftop isn't as expensive
as the penthouse is.
me: seriously, by the time
we decorate the rooftop
for a garden wedding
the expense
will be about the same.
so, don't worry about that!
if you choose the penthouse,
you won't have to worry
about anything!

katherine pondered for a bit.

katherine: i guess you are right.

me: so, you want me to tell courtney
we want the waterford room?
katherine: yes.

i was all like...
no rain...
no melting cake in the dark!

a penthouse wedding
it will be!
